Ian Astbury (singer) is the reason this band never achieved iconic status. The Cult is no longer this band anyway. It's Ian (singer), Billy Duffy (guitarist), and 3 other guys HIRED to play the songs. That's like going to see Guns & Roses but the only guys on stage are Axl and Slash, and everyone else is hired help. You know how some bands get better with age like The Who or The Rolling Stones? This is not one of them.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the songs, but when someone has a poor attitude on stage and it looks like they're on "auto pilot", it really ruins the experience. If a band tours strictly for the purpose of paying their bills (or drug habits), please don't tour. You're only making people remember you in a very poor light and forgetting how good you made us feel when we were kids.
If you've never seen Jake Shimabukuro, I would pass unless you're a die-hard fan who has to see them before you die. Otherwise, I would hop on YouTube and just watch old videos and old performances before 2001. That's the closest you're going to get to see the authentic, raw feel of the band.
I've seen them a few times, and now I wish I only saw them once so I can hold onto that old memory. I won't be going again.
